  30.  "Shareware" is a concept where you have an opportunity to try a software
  31.  program before  you  buy  it.  Shareware  is  comparable  to  commercial
  32.  software in quality, but not usually in  price.  Shareware  is  normally
  33.  much less expensive because the author has not spent the many thousands,
  34.  even millions,  of  dollars  on  advertising  that  commercial  software
  35.  companies do. Thus, the overhead is much less  and  your  cost  reflects
  36.  this. If you use a shareware program for a reasonable period of time you
  37.  are required to register it. Please honor the author's registration  fee
  38.  and register the programs you use. Many shareware programs  on  this  cd
  39.  required hundred's of hours to develop. Many of the programs you will be
  40.  using were written by authors who fully depend on the support of  honest
  41.  users to continue making affordable software.   Your  registration  does
  42.  count! ...not only to the author and his/her family, but also  when  you
  43.  register there are usually many additional benefits that are available.

  48.                                 CREAM.exe
  49.  
  50.  This is a view and retrieval program that will assist you in  retrieving
  51.  and  viewing the files on this disk,  along with their size,  date,  and
  52.  description. To run this program, simply type "Cream" and  press  enter.
  53.  There is no setup required. Cream.exe is in the directory with this file
  54.  you are reading now.  Cream.exe is  NOT  for use outside this cd. Please
  55.  do not place it for download on a BBS.
  56.  
  57.  The most unique and appreciated feature of the Cream of  the  Crop  view
  58.  and retrieval program (Cream.exe) is that it is the  only  such  program
  59.  that runs entirely on the cd. This means that you avoid setup procedures
  60.  that wasted time and disc space. The features that require  searches  on
  61.  the cd are loaded into memory  for  instant  results,  making  this  the
  62.  fastest program of its kind.
  63.  
  64.      The most notable feature is the option to display the files  in  the
  65.  Work Directory that have been  uncompressed  from  the  cd  ...AND  then
  66.  browse the text files or execute .EXE and .COM  programs  or  uncompress
  67.  .ZIP, .LZH and .ARJ archives that the author may have placed inside  the
  68.  archives that are on the cd. The browse program is very complete with 35
  69.  features including search, block mark for printing (or writing to disk),
  70.  text markers and Hex toggle... just to mention a few.  <F1> will display
  71.  a help menu with all the  features  available  with  the  menu  you  are
  72.  viewing. <Alt-D> drops to DOS from any menu.

  74.  The default for Yes and No questions is in upper case.  For  example  if
  75.  you are prompted with a message saying: "Do you want to continue? [Y/n]"
  76.  Pressing any key except "N" or "n" will default  to  the  "Yes"  choice.
  77.  Sometimes there is a Yes, Quit, or any other key to start  over  option.
  78.  In this case any key other than "Y", "y", "Q" or "q" will allow  you  to
  79.  restart the operation.

  81.  The default Work Directory is on your C: drive and the  path  to  it  is
  82.  determined by the Volume Label of the cd  you  are  using.  If  you  are
  83.  working with Cream 8 the default path to your  Work  Directory  will  be
  84.  C:\CREAM_8. You can  override this default path by starting this program
  85.  with a command line parameter that contains a "custom default path"  ie.
  86.  "Cream  D:\TEMP"   Note: Only the default path or  custom  default  path
  87.  can be erased when you are prompted with the option to erase  your  Work
  88.  Directory at the "normal" conclusion of a  session.   This  is a  safety
  89.  feature to prevent regrettable mistakes.  You will not be prompted  with
  90.  this option and the files in your Work Directory will not be  erased  if
  91.  you terminate Cream with the <AltX> shortcut.

  93.  1. Commands that are available with almost every menu include:
  94.  <F1> = Help           <AltX> = Exit       <AltD> = Drop to DOS
  95.  <ESC> = Return to previous menu           <AltW> = Work Directory
  96.  <AltM> Moves the files from the current Work Directory to a new directory
  97.  <Enter> = Process the highlighted/selected/tagged option(s)

  99.  2. Additional commands that are available when viewing the Work Directory:
  100.  <Enter> Execute, browse or uncompress the highlighted file.
  101.  <AltP> Print the highlighted file.

  103.  3. Additional commands that are available when viewing a category of files:
  104.  Pressing alpha-numeric keys serve as a search feature.
  105.  <Enter> Copy or Uncompress tagged files
  106.  <AltS> Search for key words or phrases in the file descriptions.
  107.  <AltC> Clear search markers
  108.  
  109.  Note: The option to unarchive files does not allow the root directory on
  110.  your C: drive to be used as a target directory. This is a safety feature
  111.  to protect your system's configuration files Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
  112.  from accidentally being overwritten with examples that may have been in-
  113.  cluded in an archive on the cd.

  116.                         Notes on File Compression
  117.  
  118.  The programs on this cd are compressed with Pkzip from  Pkware  Inc.  If
  119.  you use Pkware for any purpose other than the one  provided  to  extract
  120.  files from this cd from within Cream.exe you are  required  to  register
  121.  your own copy.
  122.  
  123.  The programs on this and other shareware  cd  discs  are  compressed  in
  124.  order to save space and keep all the necessary  support  files  together
  125.  with the program that needs them  to  run.  Compression  also  makes  it
  126.  possible to include the same amount of data that would  require 3  or  4
  127.  cds in an uncompressed format.

  129.  Many authors do not allow their programs to  be  distributed  under  the
  130.  shareware concept if they are not compressed - without  the  distributor
  131.  paying a fee for each disc distributed. This is because they  know  that
  132.  it is unlikely they will ever receive  any  registration  from  programs
  133.  that are distributed in a format that is already set  up  and  ready  to
  134.  run. Please support the shareware concept and register the programs that
  135.  you use.

  137.                               Extra Features!
  138.  
  139.  The files on this cd include the description inside the ZIP comment. You
  140.  can simply run "Pkunzip <filename> -c ="  to read the description of any
  141.  file.  This  feature makes it simple to build a description list of  the
  142.  files that have been removed from this disc.  The following command will
  143.  build a description listing of all the files that have been removed from
  144.  Cream of the Crop:            Pkunzip * -c = >  filename
  145.  
  146.  Note:  "Filename"  is the name of the file you wish to direct the output
  147.  into.  I have included a program named "TrimOut.exe" that can be used to
  148.  remove then nonessential information from a  rebuilt description file to
  149.  only leave the file name and description.   Execute  "TrimOut"  with the
  150.  name of the description file you have built as the first parameter. Your
  151.  work will be saved under the same file name except an "!" will begin the
  152.  new file name.  Example:  "TrimOut Files.bbs" ...will save the work into
  153.  a new file named  !files.bbs.
